The kente is the Ghanaian fabric par excellence. Closely linked to royalty, this traditional fabric was developed in the 12th century by the Ashanti and Ewe peoples. Today, it is still as present among the Akan populations also present in Ivory Coast.

The kente is hand woven from cotton and silk threads forming complex patterns with traditional meanings. The Ashanti kente generally presents geometrical patterns with bright colours. The Ewe kente has human or animal motifs.

A colourful kente is particularly worn by kings and queens, or chiefs of Ashanti villages. Considered luxurious, a kente loincloth was given to Michael Jackson at his enthronement as prince of the village Krindjabo (Ivory Coast).
