Bogolan is a Malian fabric dyed according to a technique used in Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Ivory Coast and Senegal.

The word bɔgɔlan, from the Bambara language (the most widely used language in Mali), comes from the words bɔgɔ the earth, and lan, a Bambara suffix with no French equivalent meaning "from". It refers to both the fabric and a particular style of dyeing. Marketed locally in Mali in the 1970s, production intensified in the 1980s, with the appearance of production centres, such as in San or Ségou. This type of dyeing has also been widely disseminated in the world, thanks to the creations of the designer Seydou Doumbia, known as Chris Seydou, in the 1980s. In the 2000s, bogolan fabrics are exported worldwide1.
